LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. — Stony Brook University emerged victorious against Rider University, with a final score of 72-55 on Saturday, thanks in large part to CJ Luster II, who tallied 20 points.
Luster displayed impressive shooting accuracy, hitting 7 of 11 attempts, including a remarkable 6 of 9 from three-point range. His performance was crucial for the Seawolves, who improved their record to 3-7. Alongside Luster, Joseph Octave contributed 14 points, making 5 of 12 shots from the field and converting 3 out of 4 free throws. Ben Wight also made a significant impact, scoring 12 points on 5 of 7 shooting. This victory marked the end of a challenging five-game losing streak for Stony Brook.
On the opposing side, Rider’s leading scorer was Jay Alvarez, who finished with 13 points and recorded two steals. Aasim Burton also made an impact for the Broncs, matching Alvarez’s point total while adding four assists and another two steals. Tariq Ingraham contributed seven points to the team’s effort.
The dynamics of the game shifted when Stony Brook took the lead with 4:48 remaining in the first half, ultimately heading into halftime with a 34-24 advantage after Luster’s strong contribution of 12 points. The Seawolves would go on to expand their lead even further, reaching a peak of 50-33 in the second half, a boost aided by a decisive 12-0 scoring run that left Rider struggling to catch up.
This win not only showcased Stony Brook’s resilience but also emphasized the team’s capacity to rise above previous setbacks as they continue their season.
