NEW YORK — When it comes to understanding Deion Sanders’ intentions, Travis Hunter might be the best source. The two-way star of Colorado firmly believes that Coach Prime will remain with the Buffaloes.
“I have a lot of insight. He’s not going anywhere. He’s going to stay right where he is,” Hunter remarked on Friday in Manhattan, where he is considered a frontrunner for the Heisman Trophy, set to be awarded the following night.
In his second season at Colorado, Sanders has successfully led the team to a commendable 9-3 record, securing their first bowl appearance since 2020. The Buffaloes, currently ranked No. 20, are set to compete against No. 17 BYU (10-2) in the upcoming Alamo Bowl on December 28.
Despite his growing fame and success in Boulder, rumors have circulated suggesting that the charismatic former NFL player may consider coaching opportunities elsewhere this offseason. However, Sanders has publicly downplayed these speculations.
Hunter made the move to Colorado alongside Sanders from Jackson State, a historically Black college that competes in the lower-tier FCS division. This week, Hunter has amassed numerous individual accolades, including The Associated Press player of the year title.
The junior, who plays as both a wide receiver and cornerback, has plans to enter the NFL draft in 2025 and is projected to be a top pick, potentially even the overall No. 1 selection. Nevertheless, he has reiterated the commitment shown by Sanders and his quarterback son, Shedeur Sanders, in confirming that they will participate in the Alamo Bowl, choosing to play rather than withdraw to focus on draft preparations amidst concerns about injuries.
“It’s definitely important because I started this journey with Coach Prime, Shedeur, and most of the coaching staff, so I want to see it through properly,” Hunter stated. “I didn’t get to contribute fully during my first year due to an injury, so I’m determined to finish strong. This will be our last game together, and I plan to leave everything on the field to demonstrate my loyalty to him.”
“I am really looking forward to it. I’m just thrilled to have one more chance to play football before the offseason kicks in,” he added.
