Colombia detains suspected ‘invisible’ cocaine dealer sought by UK authorities

BOGOTA, Colombia — Authorities in Colombia apprehended a suspected British drug trafficker who earned the nickname “invisible” for his ability to lead a discreet and unassuming lifestyle, which helped him evade detection while coordinating cocaine shipments from Colombia to the United Kingdom. This operation took place on Thursday in the northwestern city of Medellin, involving collaboration between local police and Interpol, as per reports from officials on Friday.

The suspect, identified as Christopher Neil, is believed to be associated with the Clan del Golfo cartel, one of Colombia’s notorious criminal organizations. Colombian authorities have termed Neil an “invisible drug trafficker,” signifying the modern trend of operatives who lead undistinguished lives, contrasting sharply with the flamboyant personas of drug lords from the 1980s and 1990s.

Neil is said to have been residing in Colombia since December 2018, and he is wanted in the UK facing allegations related to drug trafficking and money laundering. Colombian National Police reported that they monitored a vehicle in Medellin that ultimately led them to Neil’s arrest. Officials pointed out that a significant financial transaction involving millions of dollars between the UK and Colombia was crucial to the operation that brought him into custody.

At this time, there is no indication whether Neil has retained legal counsel to represent him or provide comments about his arrest.
