MELBOURNE, Australia — In a recent announcement, Tennis Australia revealed that three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka is one of the nine players who have been granted wild cards for the upcoming Australian Open scheduled for January.
The tournament will see the main draw commence on January 12, with Wawrinka set to compete at Melbourne Park alongside fellow Australians Tristan Schoolkate, Li Tu, James McCabe, Daria Saville, Ajla Tomljanovic, Emerson Jones, Talia Gibson, and Maya Joint.
Tennis Australia also mentioned that additional wild cards for the main draw, as well as wild-card entries for the qualifying rounds, will be disclosed shortly.
Wawrinka clinched his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in 2014, where he triumphed over the now-retired Rafael Nadal in a four-set match. This significant victory elevated him to his career-high ranking of world No. 3, and he successfully added titles at the French Open in 2015 and the U.S. Open in 2016 to his accolades.
Now at the age of 39, the Swiss athlete has faced various injuries over the past few years. However, he managed to reach the quarterfinals of the Australian Open in 2020, marking his fifth appearance in that stage of the tournament, which has been his last venture into a major quarterfinal.
Expressing his excitement, Wawrinka shared, “I’m incredibly grateful to receive a wild card into the Australian Open in 2025. Melbourne holds such a special place in my heart… one of the greatest milestones of my career.”
The anticipation builds as more updates regarding wild cards for the tournaments come to light in the coming days.
