AUSTIN, Texas — Arthur Kaluma made a significant impact in the first half, contributing 12 points to lead Texas to a commanding 91-67 victory over New Mexico State on Thursday evening.

Tramon Mark supported the effort with 14 points, while Jordan Pope and Ze’rik Onyema each added 10 points for Texas, which improved its record to 8-2 and showcased an impressive shooting percentage of 59% throughout the game. Despite being a standout this season, freshman guard Tre Johnson, who entered the game as the SEC’s scoring leader averaging 21.1 points per game, was limited to just nine points in 26 minutes of play.

On the other side, Christian Cook was the standout for the Aggies, scoring 22 points, complemented by Zawdie Jackson with 14 points, Jaden Harris with 11, and Peter Filipovity contributing 10 points. New Mexico State, holding a record of 4-6, managed a shooting percentage of 45% overall.

Texas established a 25-point lead at halftime, and the closest the Aggies came in the second half was when the deficit dipped just once below 20 points. The Longhorns countered this with a strong 14-3 run, pushing their lead to 30 with just over five minutes left in the game.

From the beginning, Texas was firmly in control, thanks to Mark’s three-pointer that opened the scoring. The Longhorns hit 11 of their first 15 attempts, racing ahead to a 25-12 lead by the first media timeout. They extended their advantage to 28 in the latter part of the half and went into halftime with a substantial 52-27 lead, fueled by an efficient shooting percentage of 63%.

Looking ahead, Texas is set to face Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Sunday as part of a five-game homestand, while New Mexico State will kick off its own five-game homestand on Monday against Southern Utah.
