COLLEGE PARK, Md. — On Thursday night, Maryland quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. announced his intention to enter the transfer portal, hinting at the likelihood of a new starting quarterback for the Terrapins for the second consecutive season.
In a statement shared on social media, Edwards expressed enthusiasm about his future prospects. During his first season as Maryland’s starting quarterback, he threw for a total of 2,881 yards across 11 games, taking over the role after Taulia Tagovailoa’s four-year tenure as starter. Unfortunately for the team, the Terrapins finished the season with a record of 4-8.
As for Maryland’s future at the quarterback position, the team has secured a commitment from four-star recruit Malik Washington, who is regarded as one of the nation’s top incoming quarterbacks for next year’s recruiting class.
In another development, reports from ESPN indicate that Boise State quarterback Malachi Nelson plans to enter the transfer portal as well. Nelson served as a backup this season for the postseason-bound Broncos. Highly regarded as one of the top recruits in 2023, he originally committed to Southern California before making the move to Boise State.
As these transitions unfold, both Maryland and Boise State will be looking to solidify their quarterback situations going forward into the next season.
