Taylor Jones nets 19 points as No. 6 Texas triumphs 97-39 against Southern

AUSTIN, Texas — In a dominant performance, Texas secured a commanding 97-39 victory over Southern on Wednesday night, propelled by center Taylor Jones, who recorded her second double-double of the season with 19 points and 11 rebounds in just 23 minutes of play.

Madison Booker also made significant contributions, adding 17 points, while Kyla Oldacre chipped in with 16 points in 17 minutes. Rori Harmon orchestrated the offense with nine assists, and Jones showcased her defensive skills with three blocks.

DeMya Porter was the standout for Southern, scoring 12 points; however, the team struggled offensively, shooting only 23.5% from the field.

The trio of Jones, Oldacre, and Booker was exceptionally efficient, converting 18 of 21 field goal attempts, with Jones leading the charge by sinking 8 of her 9 shots. They also excelled from the free-throw line, hitting 15 of 18 attempts, and Oldacre missed just one of her nine foul shots.

Southern has faced a tough nonconference slate, being predicted to finish second in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Unfortunately, they have encountered difficulties, losing to eight teams from major conferences by an average margin of 28 points.

Utilizing their size advantage, Texas outscored Southern 40-16 in the paint and drew numerous fouls, attempting 28 more free throws than their opponents and converting 24 more.

A pivotal moment in the game occurred when Texas surged ahead to a 46-24 halftime lead, with Oldacre emerging as a key contributor. The new addition to the Longhorns’ roster this season, Oldacre scored eight points in a quick span during the second quarter, including a fast-break layup following a steal.

Southern’s offensive struggles were compounded by committing 18 turnovers, which were below the average turnovers from Texas’ previous opponents. The Longhorns capitalized on these mistakes, scoring 29 points off turnovers.

Next on the schedule, Southern will host Jarvis Christian this Sunday, while Texas is set to face Richmond on the same day.
