HARRISBURG, Pa. — A state senator from Lancaster County is set to vacate his position in the Pennsylvania Legislature in order to take on a role with the state’s newly elected U.S. senator. This announcement was made on Tuesday.
Senator Ryan Aument, a member of the Republican Party, plans to resign before the commencement of the new legislative session scheduled for January 3. He will be assuming the role of state director for Sen.-elect David McCormick. Aument has held the position of caucus whip for the Senate Republican majority over the last two years.
His political journey began in 2010 when he was elected to the state House of Representatives, and he transitioned to the Senate in 2014, where he is currently serving his third term in a district that leans heavily Republican.
Upon Aument’s formal resignation, Lt. Governor Austin Davis will have a window of 10 days to arrange a special election to find a replacement for the remaining two years of Aument’s four-year term, which extends until January 2027.
With Aument’s departure, the 50-member Senate is expected to retain a 28-22 Republican majority when the new legislative session kicks off, maintaining the same balance as seen in the previous two-year period.
