BREMEN, Germany — Naby Keïta, a former Champions League champion, is set to join Ferencváros in Hungary on a one-year loan deal after a tumultuous period with Werder Bremen that included a lengthy suspension from the team.

Keïta, the Guinean midfielder, made his way to Bremen in June 2023 after a notable five-year tenure with Liverpool. Unfortunately, his time in Germany was marked by limited participation, as he only took part in five matches for the club. The loan arrangement will commence next month, as confirmed by Bremen.

The situation escalated in April when Bremen suspended Keïta from the squad due to claims that he declined to travel for a Bundesliga match unless he was guaranteed a spot in the starting lineup.

Clemens Fritz, the managing director for sport at Bremen, expressed relief at reaching a resolution for all parties involved. He stated, “We are glad to have worked alongside Naby and his agent to find a solution. It was evident that Naby would not return to play for Werder, so the loan agreement benefits both sides. We wish him much success in Hungary.”

The upcoming season aims to provide Keïta with an opportunity to regain his footing in the sport while contributing to his new team in Hungary.
