Tulane University and head coach Jon Sumrall have reached an agreement on a contract extension, as announced by athletic director David Harris on Monday.
Harris highlighted the rapidly changing landscape of college athletics and noted that Sumrall’s vision is crucial for the program’s success in this dynamic environment.
While the specific details regarding the duration and monetary terms of the extension were not disclosed, it is understood that Sumrall is already signed through the 2029 season with an annual salary nearing $3 million.
Harris’s statements underscore a growing emphasis on enhancing resources for player retention, especially given the current trends involving transfer regulations and Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) payments.
Recently, Sumrall’s name has surfaced in discussions for several prominent coaching positions, including at North Carolina and West Virginia.
However, during a press conference on Sunday night regarding Tulane’s forthcoming Gasparilla Bowl game against Florida, Sumrall emphasized his loyalty to the Green Wave, stating that he hadn’t actively pursued other opportunities despite his agent receiving inquiries.
“I’m very happy — except for the fact that we’ve lost the last two games,” Sumrall expressed when asked about his potential job prospects.
In his inaugural season with Tulane, the team has performed impressively with a record of 9-4, having previously achieved an eight-game winning streak before concluding the regular season with a defeat to Memphis.
They then lost 35-14 to Army in the American Athletic Conference championship game.
The upcoming Gasparilla Bowl is set to take place on December 20 in Tampa, Florida.
