LONDON — David Coote, a match official in the Premier League, has been dismissed from his role following a determination by the referees’ association that his position has become “untenable.” This outcome comes after an internal investigation into Coote’s behavior, which was initiated earlier this month.

The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) placed Coote on suspension on November 12 as they reviewed a video released by a media outlet that featured him making derogatory comments about former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp.

Additionally, UEFA has begun its own inquiry into Coote after another video surfaced, seemingly showing him using cocaine during this year’s European Championship. Further complicating his situation, the Football Association is also looking into claims that he engaged in discussions with a spectator about potentially issuing a yellow card during a match. Coote has firmly denied any allegations of misconduct.

In a statement, the PGMOL confirmed that Coote’s employment was terminated immediately following the investigation’s conclusion. They noted that his behavior constituted a serious breach of his employment contract, leading to the determination that he could no longer remain in his role.

Despite these serious findings, the organization has expressed concern for Coote’s well-being and the importance of offering him support moving forward. Coote retains the option to appeal against the termination of his employment.

The controversy is fueled by two video clips, seemingly captured on a mobile device, that show Coote sharing personal views about Liverpool FC and its former head coach. In one clip, an individual resembling Coote uses profanity to describe Liverpool and employs an offensive term for Klopp, conveying his dislike for the coach due to perceived arrogance and previous allegations of dishonesty.

It remains uncertain when these videos were recorded or if they have been altered in any way. In a subsequent shorter video, the individuals involved explicitly emphasize the need to keep the content private.
