Lara Trump has announced her decision to resign from her position as co-chair of the Republican National Committee (RNC) as she explores various opportunities now that her father-in-law, Donald Trump, is set to return to the presidency.
Among the options on her radar is the possibility of filling the Senate seat currently held by Florida Senator Marco Rubio, whom Trump has nominated as his secretary of state. Should Rubio’s nomination succeed, his successor would be appointed by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and would serve for a term of two years until the next official election in 2026.
In an interview, Lara Trump expressed her openness to the prospect of taking up the Senate seat, saying, “It is something I would seriously consider. If I’m being completely transparent, I don’t know exactly what that would look like. And I certainly want to get all of the information possible if that is something that’s real for me. But yeah, I would 100% consider it.”
Assuming her role as RNC co-chair in March, Lara Trump played a significant role in supporting the Republican Party’s resurgence in the White House and the Senate, while also maintaining a slim majority in the House. Her next steps could potentially influence the direction of Republican politics due to her prominent status and her connection to the incoming president.
The notion of having a Trump family member in the Senate has garnered support within certain Republican factions. Notably, Maye Musk, mother of billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, has advocated for Lara Trump to succeed Rubio, stating on X, “The Senate is an old man’s club. We desperately need a smart, young, outspoken woman who will reveal their secrets.” Lara Trump, at 42, fits that description.
Elon Musk, who spent election night alongside Lara Trump at Mar-a-Lago, endorsed her potential Senate candidacy, saying, “Lara Trump is genuinely great.”
Under the leadership of chairman Michael Whatley and co-chair Lara Trump, the RNC made significant investments in mobilizing over 230,000 volunteers, as well as enlisting a robust team of legal support to reinforce their “election integrity” initiatives—a response to the aftermath of Donald Trump’s defeat to Democrat Joe Biden four years ago, which was riddled with claims of unproven voter fraud. In the meantime, other organizations like Turning Point Action and Musk’s America PAC took the lead in advertising and voter mobilization efforts.
While Whatley will continue in his role as RNC chairman, Lara Trump believes she has achieved her objectives as co-chair. “With that big win, I kind of feel like my time is up,” she remarked. “What I intended to do has been done.”
Recently, President-elect Trump endorsed RNC Treasurer KC Crosbie as Lara Trump’s successor as co-chair, noting her significant contributions: “As Treasurer, she helped the RNC smash every fundraising record in History, and fortified our Party’s financial foundation.” He praised Crosbie for her longstanding support of true Republican candidates nationwide.
Lara Trump also commended Musk’s new initiative, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which focuses on streamlining the federal workforce and reducing governmental waste—a key aspect of Trump’s forthcoming two-term agenda. “I really don’t think we’ve seen movement like this in our federal government since our country’s founding,” she asserted, expressing optimism about the transformative potential of the initiatives put forth by Musk and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy.
Looking ahead, Lara Trump discussed the forthcoming administration’s structure, suggesting that unlike before, she doesn’t anticipate seeing family members in formal roles within the White House this time. “He really wants to get in there and do a good job for the four years, and that’s all he wants to serve,” she stated, referring to her father-in-law.
Furthermore, Lara Trump is optimistic that the Republican Party will emerge more unified than ever. She noted significant internal changes since her co-chair appointment in May, including a merger of staff from the Trump campaign and the RNC, which she believes could present challenges for GOP lawmakers not aligned with Trump’s agenda. “The whole party has totally shifted and totally changed,” she remarked, indicating a newfound boldness among party members in expressing their political views.
