CRYSTAL CITY, Mo. — On Sunday, police engaged a suspect in Missouri who allegedly opened fire following a vehicle crash, which led investigators to discover the body of a woman inside the vehicle.

The incident unfolded in the St. Louis suburb of Festus, where law enforcement received a report of gunfire near a local restaurant around 11:10 a.m., according to Festus Police Chief Doug Wendel. Officers from Festus, along with those from Crystal City, located the suspect on a highway and attempted to pull over the black pickup truck he was operating.

The suspect’s vehicle collided with a concrete median barrier and eventually crashed near a retail establishment. Following the crash, the man, who was reportedly wearing body armor, exited the truck and began firing at the police, as stated by Crystal City Police Chief Chad Helms.

In response, two officers from Crystal City returned fire, injuring the suspect, who was subsequently transported to a medical facility. The suspect sustained multiple gunshot wounds, as noted by Jefferson County Sheriff Dave Marshak. Fortunately, the officers involved did not suffer any injuries, according to Helms.

Upon inspecting the vehicle, investigators found the body of a woman, believed to have been deceased prior to the incident involving gunfire. Authorities are currently working to ascertain the circumstances leading to her death, as reported by Marshak.

At this time, the identities of the suspect, the deceased woman, and the officers involved have not been released by authorities.
