Cotie McMahon nets 25 points to guide No. 12 Ohio State women past No. 21 Illinois 83-74 in their Big Ten debut.

    COLUMBUS, Ohio — Cotie McMahon put on an impressive display by scoring a season-best 25 points, leading No. 12 Ohio State to maintain their perfect record with an 83-74 win over No. 21 Illinois during their Big Ten Conference opener on Sunday.

    McMahon showcased her shooting skills by connecting on 7 of 12 attempts from the field, including two successful 3-pointers, and converting 9 of 12 free throws.

    In addition to McMahon’s standout performance, Taylor Thierry contributed significantly with 14 points, hitting 5 of 7 shots also including two from beyond the arc. Chance Gray rounded out the Buckeyes’ notable scoring with 13 points.

    For the Fighting Illini, Genesis Bryant was the top scorer, sinking four 3-pointers and totaling 22 points. Kendall Bostic delivered a strong performance as well, achieving a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds, while Jasmine Brown-Hagger added 14 points from the bench.

    During the first quarter, Thierry and McMahon each scored six points, helping Ohio State to a narrow 18-16 lead.

    In the second quarter, Gray propelled the team further ahead by scoring nine points, as the Buckeyes dominated by outscoring Illinois 22-10, resulting in a 40-26 halftime advantage.

    The third quarter saw McMahon continuing to shine with 11 points, alongside Jaloni Cambridge who scored six, allowing Ohio State to extend their lead to 61-43.

    Although Bryant managed to hit a three-pointer pulling Illinois closer at 73-65 with just over three minutes remaining, they could not edge closer to overturn the deficit.

    Looking ahead, Ohio State will host Ball State on Tuesday, while Illinois will next welcome Bradley on Thursday.
