Wolfsburg secures thrilling 4-3 victory, overcoming Mainz after trailing three times in Bundesliga match

WOLFSBURG, Germany — On Sunday, Wolfsburg climbed to fifth place in the Bundesliga after a thrilling 4-3 victory over Mainz at the Volkswagen Arena, thanks to a late brace from Jonas Wind.

The Denmark forward, who came on for Patrick Wimmer at halftime, scored crucial goals in the 84th minute and added another in the fourth minute of stoppage time, helping the team extend its unbeaten streak to eight matches.

Wolfsburg’s performance was particularly notable considering that Mainz dominated the first half, taking the lead on three separate occasions.

Paul Nebel opened the scoring for the visitors only 11 minutes into the match, but Wolfsburg’s Mohamed Amoura equalized just eight minutes later.

Mainz regained the lead shortly before halftime when Jonathan Burkardt found the net from close range. However, 12 minutes into the second half, Andreas Hanche-Olsen inadvertently turned Tiago Tomas’ shot into his own goal, leveling the score again.

Midway through the second half, Nebel struck again to put Mainz ahead 3-2. However, Wind’s remarkable finishing skills turned the tide for Wolfsburg; his first goal was a stunning long-range shot from 18 yards, followed by a powerful header from a deep cross to seal the comeback victory.

In another match, Hoffenheim ended a three-match losing streak with a 1-1 draw against Freiburg at home.

After suffering defeats in the Europa League, Bundesliga, and the German Cup, Hoffenheim fell behind midway through the second half when Matthias Ginter scored from a cross delivered by Vincenzo Grifo.

Nineteen-year-old Tom Bischof came to the rescue for Hoffenheim, firing a low shot into the net with 17 minutes left in the match, marking his second goal in three games.

The draw leaves Freiburg in seventh place, where they sit on 21 points, tied with Wolfsburg and Borussia Dortmund above them. Hoffenheim, on the other hand, currently stands in 14th place.
