TORONTO — In an exciting matchup on Saturday in the Professional Women’s Hockey League, the Minnesota Frost emerged victorious against the Toronto Sceptres with a score of 6-3.
Britta Curl-Salemme and Michaela Cava were instrumental in the win, each contributing two goals. Curl-Salemme’s effort put Minnesota ahead 4-3 early in the third period, while Cava sealed the victory with two additional goals, including one into an empty net to conclude the scoring.
In addition to Curl-Salemme and Cava’s performances, Claire Butorac and Dominique Petrie also found the back of the net, while goaltender Maddy Rooney showcased her skills by stopping 21 shots. With this win, Minnesota improved their record to 2-0-1 in the season.
On the other side, the Sceptres had goals from Daryl Watts, Victoria Bach, and Jesse Compher, bringing their season record to 1-2-0. Notably, Minnesota has now defeated Toronto four consecutive times, dating back to last season’s playoff series where the Frost won the final three matches in a best-of-five semifinal after initially trailing.
In other highlights from the game, Minnesota’s defender Maggie Flaherty was serving the first of a two-game suspension for a headshot on Boston’s Alina Mueller, with Mae Batherson stepping in for her debut in the PWHL. Batherson, interestingly, is the sister of Ottawa Senators forward Drake Batherson.
For Toronto, Rylind MacKinnon stands out as one of only two Canadian university players in the league, alongside New York’s Emmy Fecteau from Concordia. MacKinnon, a former defender at the University of British Columbia, has also notched two assists this season.
Looking ahead, the Sceptres will be facing off against New York on Wednesday night, while the Frost are set to host Ottawa on Thursday night.
