Chicago Cubs secure two-year deal with left-handed pitcher Matthew Boyd

CHICAGO — The Chicago Cubs have completed a two-year agreement worth $29 million with left-handed pitcher Matthew Boyd, as confirmed by the team on Saturday.

Boyd, who successfully returned from Tommy John surgery, had a solid season with the Cleveland Guardians, where he recorded a 2-2 win-loss record and a 2.72 ERA over eight starts. Additionally, he contributed to the Guardians’ postseason run, making three starts and giving up only one run while striking out 14 batters across 11 and two-thirds innings.

After signing with Cleveland in June, Boyd made his season debut against the Cubs on August 13, where he pitched effectively for 5 and one-third innings, allowing just one run.

As Boyd joins the Cubs, he strengthens a pitching rotation that features Justin Steele, Shota Imanaga, and Jameson Taillon. Over the past two seasons, the Cubs have consistently placed second in the National League Central, ending with an 83-79 record both years.

In another update from Saturday, the Cubs revealed that shortstop Dansby Swanson underwent core surgery in early October. However, he is anticipated to recover without any delays affecting his playing time.

Swanson, who will celebrate his 31st birthday in February, had a solid offensive performance last season, hitting .242 with 16 home runs and 66 runs batted in across 149 games during his second year in Chicago.
