AMHERST, Mass. — In a thrilling matchup on Saturday, Quinton Mincey led UMass-Lowell to a 96-83 victory over UMass, scoring an impressive 27 points.
Alongside Mincey’s contributions, the River Hawks (6-4) saw Martin Somerville add 22 points along with five assists. Yuri Covington also played a significant role in the victory, netting 19 points while shooting 5 of 9 from the field, including 2 for 5 from beyond the arc, and converting 7 of 8 free-throw attempts.
For the Minutemen (3-7), Jayden Ndjigue had an impactful game with 17 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and two steals. His teammate Jaylen Curry matched his scoring with another 17 points, adding two steals, while Marqui Worthy contributed with 15 points.
UMass-Lowell managed to gain a 17-13 lead in the first half thanks to a 10-0 scoring run. The River Hawks, fueled by Covington’s 12 first-half points, held a narrow 40-38 advantage at halftime. The crucial moment came when Xzavier Lino hit a jump shot, putting UMass-Lowell ahead for the last time with 15:41 remaining. From there, they went on to outscore UMass by 11 points in the second half.
Looking ahead, UMass-Lowell is set to compete against LIU at home on Wednesday, while UMass will host UMass-Boston on Saturday.
