MIAMI – Florida International University (FIU) announced the hiring of Willie Simmons as their new head football coach on Saturday, signaling a change in direction for the program.
While the details of the agreement have not been disclosed, Simmons previously served as the running backs coach at Duke during the current season.
From 2018 to 2023, Simmons achieved impressive success as the head coach of Florida A&M, where he led the team to an admirable record of 45 wins against just 13 losses and secured two HBCU national championships. A former quarterback at Clemson, Simmons has also held coaching positions at Prairie View A&M, Alcorn State, Middle Tennessee State, and his own alma mater, Clemson.
At FIU, Simmons steps in to fill the role previously held by Mike MacIntyre, who was relieved of his duties earlier this month after leading the Panthers to three consecutive seasons with 4-8 records. This recent change underscores the ongoing struggles the FIU football program has faced over the years.
Historically, FIU has struggled significantly, finishing with a losing record in 17 of its 21 football seasons. The only two coaches in the program’s history to achieve a winning record are Mario Cristobal and Butch Davis, both of whom accomplished this feat twice during their tenures.
As Simmons begins his new role, hopes are high for revitalizing the football program and improving its long-standing challenges. With his track record of success at Florida A&M and his extensive coaching background, there is optimism that he may bring a new energy to FIU football.
