THE HAGUE, Netherlands — A significant explosion shook a neighborhood in the Dutch capital early Saturday morning, resulting in the destruction of several apartments and leaving numerous individuals injured, as reported by local officials.
While the precise cause of the blast in The Hague remains uncertain, emergency services have confirmed the rescue of four individuals from the debris who have since been transported to nearby hospitals. However, there is no confirmation on how many people may still be trapped beneath the rubble.
Several ambulances were seen stationed nearby, prepared for additional casualties as the situation unfolded. A representative from the local hospital indicated that staff were on standby to treat any incoming injuries.
Residents in the northeastern district of Mariahoeve experienced the terrifying moment firsthand, reporting a loud explosion followed by cries for help before dawn. One local woman recounted her initial reaction, expressing disbelief and stating that she thought an earthquake had struck the area.
In response to the emergency, Dutch authorities dispatched a specialized urban search and rescue unit, which included four specially trained dogs capable of locating trapped victims. This team has previously assisted during significant disasters, including the catastrophic earthquake in Turkey earlier this year.
