Steelers Receiver George Pickens Responds to Browns Defensive Back Newsome: ‘I Don’t Recognize Him’

PITTSBURGH — George Pickens, a wide receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers, seems unfazed by a potential rematch with Cleveland’s cornerback Greg Newsome II. Just two weeks after they clashed amid the snowy stands during the Browns’ surprising 24-19 victory over the Steelers, Pickens adopted a dismissive tone when asked if he planned to communicate with Newsome, who had referred to him as a “fake tough guy” following their encounter. “I don’t even know who that is,” Pickens replied nonchalantly.

If Pickens requires a reminder, he and Newsome’s last confrontation culminated in a physical tussle during Pittsburgh’s failed Hail Mary attempt on the game’s final play. The duo grappled and rolled into the stands, with Pickens yanking on Newsome’s helmet during their descent against a wall. Post-incident footage showed Pickens needing to be restrained as Newsome walked away, leading to discussions about their escalating rivalry.

Newsome, who claimed ignorance regarding the cause of their altercation, brushed off Pickens’ comments as anything other than petty. “Nah, because the only way you would take something disrespectful is if you actually care about that person,” he stated. He expressed indifference to Pickens’ statements, affirming that he harbors no care for him.

The talented yet temperamental Pickens has emerged as a focal point of media attention throughout his three seasons in the NFL, frequently showcasing signs of frustration and immaturity. Accumulating multiple fines this fall, including one for a facemask on Dallas’ Jourdan Lewis, he has inevitably fostered a reputation among opponents as someone easily unsettled.

Despite being sanctioned for unsportsmanlike conduct after receptions during a recent matchup against Cincinnati, Pickens downplayed the notion that defenders get under his skin. He attributed the continuous penalties and his frequent scrapes with players like Newsome, Lewis, and Washington’s Mike Sainristil to his intensity on the field. “That comes from playing hard,” he explained, suggesting that being a target for penalties is just part of his style of play.

Currently leading the first-place Steelers (9-3) with 55 catches for 850 yards and three touchdowns, Pickens isn’t exactly playing solely for his team’s needs. His coaches and teammates have offered a mix of support and frustration regarding his antics. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin advised Pickens to mature quickly after his indiscretions in Cincinnati, while offensive tackle Broderick Jones tried to offer guidance on managing emotions and preventing moments that harm the team’s efforts.

Jones remarked on the importance of showing restraint, indicating that an impressive play should not be inhibited by unnecessary penalties that grant the opposition free yards. He noted that during their time at Georgia, Pickens faced punishment that differed substantially from the financial penalties he incurs now, highlighting a need for Pickens to maintain his competitive spirit without compromising his team’s goals. “I just feel like George doesn’t play the game for the money. He loves the game. He wants everybody to see his swagger,” Jones said.

As he prepares for the Browns yet again, Pickens continues to exhibit confidence and bravado, even delving into some light-hearted trolling regarding the Cleveland team as part of his pre-game remarks after their previous loss. Douglas reiterated his belief that their poor record—currently 3-9—is indicative of their ability, despite the competitive dynamics between the teams. “I just go by their record,” Pickens commented, dismissively noting the Browns’ struggles.

Jones chuckled at Pickens’ remarks, characterizing his behavior as playful trolling, while encouraging him to remain focused on making plays and minimize distractions. “Just keep making plays,” Jones advised as he hopes Pickens can hone his abilities while navigating the challenges of being in the spotlight.
