ATHENS, Greece — On Friday, law enforcement agencies began positioning themselves throughout the central area of Athens in anticipation of planned protests commemorating the tragic death of a teenage boy at the hands of the police back in 2008.

The incident involved 15-year-old Alexandros Grigoropoulos, who was shot dead by a police officer, igniting extensive riots that lasted for several days. To this day, his death continues to serve as a symbolic focal point for annual demonstrations, many of which have a history of escalating into violence.

Even with heavy rain falling over the Greek capital, authorities have deployed around 5,000 police personnel to secure the area on Friday, particularly around the neighborhood where the shooting took place. Measures to control the situation include the use of water cannons, as well as aerial surveillance through the use of drones and helicopters, ensuring a strong law enforcement presence near embassies, government offices, and other significant potential gathering spots.

As part of the security measures, authorities announced that there would be a series of road closures and changes to traffic routes. Public transportation systems will also see modifications, particularly affecting service at two central subway stations, which will remain closed for much of the day.

The police officer involved in the shooting of Grigoropoulos was sentenced to life in prison in 2010 but was released in 2019 after a reduction of his sentence. This ruling was confirmed during a retrial three years later. Additionally, a second officer was found guilty as an accomplice and was released on parole after serving three years behind bars.
