MELBOURNE, Australia — Former Wimbledon runner-up Nick Kyrgios is set to compete in the upcoming Australian Open, marking his first Grand Slam appearance in over two years.
The organizers of the Australian Open revealed the participant lists on Friday, confirming that Kyrgios has signed up using a protected ranking. His participation comes after a lengthy recovery period dominated by wrist and knee injuries, which kept him off the court since he reached the quarterfinals at the 2022 U.S. Open.
Kyrgios shared that he plans to make his comeback at the Brisbane International, scheduled to start on December 29, following an absence in which he played only a single ATP Tour match for more than two years.
In another significant return to the tournament, Tokyo Olympic gold medalist Belinda Bencic will also compete in the Australian Open from January 12 to 26, as she utilizes a protected ranking after her maternity leave. She became a mother to her daughter, Bella, in April.
Additionally, former world No. 4 Kei Nishikori has entered the tournament with a protected ranking as well, looking forward to his first participation in the Australian Open since 2021.
