Rickelton’s first century propels South Africa to 269-7 versus Sri Lanka in second test match

GQEBERHA, South Africa — In the opening match of their second Test at St George’s Park on Thursday, Ryan Rickelton showcased a remarkable performance, notching up his first Test century and leading South Africa to a score of 269-7 against Sri Lanka.

Rickelton scored 101 runs after stepping in for the injured Wiaan Mulder. Transitioning from his usual position in the lower middle order to bat at No. 3 for the first time, Rickelton effectively played the role of an opener, remaining at the crease from the second over until nearly the end.

Throughout his innings, Rickelton displayed resilience, enduring at least three painful hits to his gloves. His efforts were critical in forming two significant partnerships; a 133-run collaboration with captain Temba Bavuma and a subsequent 77-run partnership with Kyle Verreynne.

Bavuma contributed 78 runs to the innings, while Verreynne remained unbeaten on 48. Rickelton anchored the innings as the other two batters thrived during their time at the crease. Although the day appeared to belong to South Africa, Sri Lanka managed to turn the tide slightly at the end by claiming the wickets of Rickelton and Marco Jansen, ensuring the battle remained competitive.
