A Greyhound bus passenger was fatally shot by police after he exited the bus and ran onto a busy Atlanta freeway while wielding a knife, according to law enforcement officials.

The incident took place in the early hours of Thursday, just after 1 a.m. on Interstate 75, which is located south of downtown Atlanta. Police reported that they were responding to an emergency call regarding an individual who had been stabbed on the Greyhound bus. However, the press release did not elaborate on the circumstances surrounding that stabbing.

Upon arrival, officers made several attempts to persuade the man to drop his weapon. Despite their efforts, he continued to move further into the lanes of traffic, putting himself at risk in the path of oncoming vehicles. Authorities stated that the situation escalated when the man began to approach the officers in an aggressive manner.

In response to the perceived threat, the officers discharged their firearms, resulting in the man being struck. He was subsequently transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he was declared deceased.

Fortunately, there were no reported injuries among the police officers or any motorists on the freeway during the incident, as confirmed by law enforcement.

Further information on the events leading up to the shooting is anticipated to be released later on Thursday.
