Auston Matthews nets two goals, leading Toronto to a 3-2 victory over Nashville

TORONTO — Auston Matthews netted two goals early in the third period to help the Toronto Maple Leafs overcome an early deficit and secure a 3-2 victory over the Nashville Predators on Wednesday evening.

William Nylander also contributed a goal for the Maple Leafs, who benefitted from Joseph Woll’s 22 saves in the match.

Mitch Marner was instrumental in the win, providing three assists as Toronto celebrated its third consecutive triumph, marking the team’s tenth victory in the last twelve games.

On the other side, Jonathan Marchessault and Mark Jankowski found the net for Nashville, which entered the matchup on a three-game losing streak, all decided in overtime by a score of 3-2.

Juuse Saros made 25 stops in goal for the Predators, who have now dropped five straight contests.

The game began with Nashville taking the lead in the first period when Marchessault capitalized on an unusual bounce.

However, Matthews quickly turned the tide, scoring two goals just 1:58 apart in the third period. This achievement marked his third goal in three games since returning from an upper-body injury that sidelined him for nearly a month.

Marchessault’s performance in this game also added him to a distinguished list, making him one of only three active undrafted players to reach 500 career points, joining Artemi Panarin and Mats Zuccarello.

**Key Notes**
For the Leafs, Marner was among 17 players selected as Canada rounded out its roster for the NHL 4 Nations Face-Off, while defenseman Jani Hakanpaa was named to Finland’s squad.

On the Predators’ side, veteran center Gustav Nyquist was chosen for Sweden’s team competing in the tournament set for February in Montreal and Boston.

**Defining Moment**
Matthews’ second goal of the game was a memorable sequence where he lost control of the puck while attempting to maneuver past Nyquist but still managed to deceive Saros, marking his eighth goal of the season.

**Significant Statistic**
Despite their notable offseason signings—including Marchessault, Steven Stamkos, and defenseman Brady Skjei—the Predators entered this game ranked last in the NHL, averaging only 2.32 goals per game.

**Upcoming Matches**
Nashville will continue its three-game road trip with a match against the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday night. Meanwhile, Toronto will host the Washington Capitals on Friday evening to conclude its three-game homestand.
