EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — With Tommy DeVito still nursing a sore forearm, Drew Lock will take the reins as the starting quarterback for the Giants once again when they face off against the New Orleans Saints this Sunday.
Head Coach Brian Daboll made the announcement earlier this week, highlighting that Lock displayed promising performance traits even in the loss to Dallas on Thanksgiving, and will therefore receive all first-team snaps this week.
DeVito, who suffered the injury in his inaugural start after stepping in for Daniel Jones during the game against Tampa Bay on November 24, has been limited during practice sessions. Daboll indicated that it is uncertain whether DeVito will be available to serve as the backup on Sunday at MetLife Stadium, where the Giants (2-10) have struggled this season, failing to secure a win in any of their six home outings.
In the event that DeVito is unable to compete, Tim Boyle, who recently joined the team, would step in as the backup quarterback for the matchup against the Saints (4-8).
In his last outing, Lock completed 21 of 32 passes for a total of 178 yards but did throw an interception that was returned for a touchdown. On a positive note, he also achieved a career-high of 57 rushing yards, including an 8-yard touchdown run, and assisted in setting up Tyrone Tracy’s short touchdown rush with a notable 28-yard scramble.
Lock, who signed with the Giants as a free agent during the offseason, had originally served as Jones’ backup for the first ten games of the season. When Daboll opted to bench Jones following a tough 2-8 start, Lock was placed behind DeVito on the depth chart due to DeVito’s previous success in stimulating a three-game winning streak last season while Jones and Tyrod Taylor dealt with injuries.
DeVito sustained his injury late in the Giants’ 30-7 defeat against the Buccaneers, and Lock was called upon to start against the Cowboys just four days later.
