DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip — A health official in Palestine reported that an Israeli airstrike on a camp for displaced individuals in Gaza resulted in the deaths of at least 21 people on Wednesday.
Atif Al-Hout, who serves as the director of Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, indicated that the attack also left 28 individuals injured.
The Israeli military acknowledged the reports and stated it was in the process of investigating but had no immediate statement to release concerning the incident.
The attack occurred in the Muwasi area, a large coastal refugee camp that accommodates hundreds of thousands of displaced residents, situated near Khan Younis.
This incident followed a series of airstrikes by Israeli forces that targeted various locations within the enclave, with earlier assaults in central Gaza resulting in the deaths of eight individuals, four of whom were children.
The conflict in Gaza escalated significantly after militants from Hamas carried out an attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, that claimed the lives of roughly 1,200 individuals, primarily civilians, and led to the abduction of around 250 others.
Currently, it is believed that about 100 hostages remain within Gaza, with at least one-third feared dead.
According to the Gaza Health Ministry, Israel’s military operations have led to the deaths of more than 44,500 Palestinians, with women and children comprising the majority of casualties, although the ministry does not specify the number of combatants among the deceased.
The Israeli military claims that over 17,000 militants have been killed during its operations but has not provided substantiation for this assertion.
