In an announcement made on Wednesday, President-elect Donald Trump appointed a healthcare executive to assume the crucial role of lead hostage negotiator for his administration. This decision comes at a time when the United States is actively working to secure the freedom of individuals held captive in Gaza and various other locations globally.

Adam Boehler has been selected to take on the position of special presidential envoy for hostage affairs, a role that has been filled since 2020 by Roger Carstens. Carstens was previously appointed by Trump and continued in the position during the Biden administration’s tenure.

Throughout that time, the U.S. successfully facilitated the return of numerous American citizens who had been taken hostage or wrongfully detained in different countries, including Russia. Notable individuals rescued during this period include WNBA athlete Brittney Griner and Wall Street Journal correspondent Evan Gershkovich, in addition to cases in Iran, China, Venezuela, and Afghanistan.

Boehler, who is the founder and CEO of Rubicon Founders, a healthcare investment firm, previously held the position of the inaugural CEO of the International Development Finance Corporation. In his statement regarding the appointment, Trump highlighted Boehler’s significant experience as the chief negotiator for the Abraham Accords, which aimed to enhance Israel’s recognition within the Arab world.

Expressing confidence in Boehler’s capabilities, Trump remarked, “He has negotiated with some of the toughest people in the world, including the Taliban, but Adam knows that NO ONE is tougher than the United States of America, at least when President Trump is its leader. Adam will work tirelessly to bring our Great American Citizens HOME.” This statement was shared on Trump’s Truth Social platform.
