BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Trent Dilfer will continue as the head coach of the UAB Blazers for the upcoming third season, despite facing two consecutive seasons with losing records.
Athletic director Mark Ingram announced on Tuesday that Dilfer will remain at the helm for 2025, following a challenging 3-9 season, which included notable defeats against Tulane (71-20) and Memphis (53-18).
In his tenure thus far, Dilfer, who is a Super Bowl-winning quarterback, holds a record of 7-17 and has managed to secure five victories within the American Athletic Conference. UAB previously enjoyed six straight bowl game appearances before Dilfer’s appointment on November 30, 2022.
Ingram acknowledged the disappointing outcomes of the last two seasons but expressed confidence in Dilfer’s growth and future vision. “Coach Dilfer has learned a great deal and has a plan for the future,” said Ingram. “The challenges presented by NIL and the transfer portal make this period one of the toughest in college football history.
“However, I have witnessed Coach Dilfer’s dedication and believe that his comprehensive understanding of the game, commitment to UAB, and determination will yield positive results soon.” Ingram also indicated that the program plans to implement operational and staff changes, along with increasing investments.
Dilfer, who achieved Super Bowl glory with the Baltimore Ravens in 2000, transitioned from a successful coaching career at Lipscomb Academy in Nashville, Tennessee, where he guided the team to three state championship games in just four seasons, to the collegiate level.
“I understand that our fans deserve better than our recent performance, and I have been dedicated to improving,” Dilfer stated. “I now have a clearer understanding of the necessary steps for UAB football to succeed, and I’m committed to taking action.
“It is evident we need to approach our strategy differently, and I am ready to implement my plan to elevate our program to where it ought to be.”
