New York Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner is dealing with a hamstring injury that might keep him out of the upcoming game against the Miami Dolphins this Sunday.
Interim coach Jeff Ulbrich shared on Wednesday that Gardner was still undergoing evaluations following his exit from last Sunday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks due to the injury.
Ulbrich seemed doubtful about Gardner’s chances of participating in the game, especially facing a fast Dolphins wide receiver lineup, which features players like Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle.
“They’re still evaluating the severity of the injury, beyond what the MRI has indicated,” Ulbrich commented regarding Gardner’s condition. “Given the position he plays and the opponent we’re facing, I believe a subpar hamstring isn’t suitable for this matchup.”
He added, “We’ll have to see how he progresses. If he feels well enough and is ready to compete, then we’ll definitely let him play. However, we don’t want him on the field if he can’t give it his all.”
Gardner, who earned All-Pro accolades in both of his previous seasons, has had a mixed performance in his third year. Prior to his injury against the Seahawks, he was showing promise, registering a season-best two passes defended; however, he is still seeking his first interception for the year.
Ulbrich also mentioned that running back Breece Hall (knee), right tackle Morgan Moses (shoulder), and right guard Alijah Vera-Tucker (ankle) did not participate in practice on Wednesday.
Hall, who was in question ahead of the Seahawks game, played and managed to gain 60 yards on 12 carries. According to Ulbrich, Hall is feeling fine, and the coaching staff will monitor his condition as the week goes on.
“We’re optimistic, and he is too,” Ulbrich noted. “He believes he’ll be able to play. We will evaluate how the week unfolds. Last week, we were uncertain, and by Friday, he was looking great, so I remain hopeful for a repeat situation.”
Linebacker C.J. Mosley, who has sat out the previous five games due to a herniated disk in his neck, is expected to gradually increase his practice participation after returning to full pads last week.
“He felt good, but not completely great, so we’re going to give him an additional week to assess his situation,” Ulbrich explained.
The Jets have also opened a 21-day practice window for wide receiver Allen Lazard (chest) and offensive lineman Wes Schweitzer (hand), both of whom are currently on injured reserve. Ulbrich mentioned that both players might have a chance to return for the game against Miami.
