Jennie Finch reflects on her pride in representing the Chicago Bandits, emphasizing the significance of the team in advancing women’s softball in the United States.
As a celebrated Olympic gold medalist, Finch ranks as one of the sport’s most accomplished athletes, showcasing her talent with the Bandits in the National Pro Fastpitch league from 2005 to 2010.
During her tenure, the Bandits garnered six championships between 2006 and 2019 before the league ceased operations in 2021.
With excitement, Finch welcomes the revival of the Bandits in the softball arena, as one of four teams set to participate in the Athletes Unlimited Softball League (AUSL) beginning in June 2025.
While the teams do not yet have specific city affiliations, Finch recognizes the Bandits brand as a formidable legacy in the sport.
“The Chicago Bandits had remarkable success, and it’s exhilarating to carry forward that legacy and connect the past to AU,” Finch expressed joyfully.
“For me, as a former Chicago Bandit, I am thrilled to help pass the torch, ensuring that our accomplishments pave the way for the future.”
Alongside the Bandits, the AUSL will feature three additional teams: the Blaze, Talons, and Volts.
Initially, the league aims to adopt a touring format starting in June 2025, transitioning to city-based teams by 2026, with games anticipated in various cities, including Chicago and Wichita, Kansas.
Finch will spearhead the Bandits’ efforts as general manager, supported by coach Stacey Nuveman-Deniz.
The Blaze will be led by Dana Sorensen as general manager and Alisa Goler as head coach, while the Talons appoint Lisa Fernandez as general manager and Howard Dobson as head coach.
The Volts will be managed by Cat Osterman, with Kelly Kretschman serving as the head coach.
The player pool, which will be available for selection by these teams, includes distinguished athletes such as Olympic silver medalist Dejah Mulipola, along with Carley Hoover, Erin Coffel, Payton Gottshall, Kayla Kowalik, Aubrey Leach, Mariah Mazon, Jordan Roberts, Anissa Urtez, Jessie Warren, and Morgan Zerkle.
