LOS ANGELES — In a significant political shift, Democrat Adam Gray secured victory in California’s 13th Congressional District on Tuesday, defeating incumbent Republican Rep. John Duarte in the last U.S. House race to determine its outcome this election cycle.
Gray’s narrow win, which came by fewer than 200 votes, means that Republicans now hold 220 House seats while Democrats maintain 215. Election officials confirmed on Tuesday that all ballots had been processed.
Duarte originally claimed this seat in 2022 by just 564 votes against Gray, making it one of the most tightly contested races in the nation. Given the slim margin of victory and the district’s Democratic leaning—approximately 11 points favoring registered Democrats—Duarte was considered at risk of losing his position.
