LAS VEGAS — In a thrilling showcase of defensive prowess, Ivan Barbashev netted a goal during a counterattack midway through the second period, allowing the Vegas Golden Knights to clinch a 1-0 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night, effectively breaking the Oilers’ three-game winning streak.

Barbashev initiated the scoring sequence after intercepting a backward pass from Leon Draisaitl. Although he initially sought to distribute the puck to teammate Jack Eichel during a two-on-one break, the pass ricocheted off Edmonton defenseman Evan Bouchard, landing back in Barbashev’s possession, setting him up perfectly to score.

Adin Hill, who has been instrumental for Vegas, recorded his second shutout of the season, marking the ninth of his professional career. The Oilers had been on a roll, posting a record of 5-0-1 in their past six games, with Hill tending the net throughout that stretch.

On the flip side, Oilers’ goalie Stuart Skinner was credited with 15 saves but faced the disappointment of a shutout, marking the fourth time this season his team has been held scoreless.

Observations from the game highlighted the Oilers’ missed opportunities during the second period, where they had seven high-danger chances and managed nine shots on goal, according to data from Natural Stat Trick.

Meanwhile, the Golden Knights entered the third period focused on defense as they faced significant pressure from the Oilers, who dominated possession. Despite being outshot 16-2 in the final frame, Vegas’ defense proved resilient, allowing only three high-danger scoring chances.

A pivotal moment unfolded in the final two minutes when the Oilers had a 6-on-5 advantage. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins came close to tying the game with a rebound shot, yet it deflected off Hill with just 1:25 remaining.

A notable stat from the match was that only a total of 8 shots were recorded in the first period, marking the second-lowest total for any first period this season and tying for the lowest in any period overall.

Looking ahead, the Oilers will be back on home ice to face the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday, while the Golden Knights are set to take on the Anaheim Ducks in their next outing on Wednesday.
