Wiggins, Schieffelin, and Clemson’s defense secure a 70-66 victory over No. 4 Kentucky

CLEMSON, S.C. — In a thrilling matchup during the SEC/ACC Challenge, Clemson defeated No. 4 Kentucky with a final score of 70-66. Chauncey Wiggins contributed 12 points, while Ian Schieffelin dazzled with 11 points and an impressive 20 rebounds, marking a career high for him. This victory improves Clemson’s record to 8-1, while Kentucky drops to 7-1.

The Tigers were exceptional on defense, managing to restrict Kentucky’s high-scoring offense to 30 points below their season average of 96.7 points per game, which was the highest in the nation. Clemson took control of the game in the second half, establishing a lead at 53-52 with exactly 10 minutes remaining after a layup from Del Jones. Following this, the Tigers initiated a strong 10-2 run. Kentucky attempted a late comeback with Lamont Butler hitting a three-pointer that brought the score to 68-66 just 2.4 seconds prior to the final buzzer, but Chase Hunter’s two successful free throws ensured that Clemson would come away with the win.

Otega Oweh was a standout for Kentucky, leading the team with 17 points, while Amari Williams added nine points and secured ten rebounds. Although Schieffelin had a rough shooting night, making only 4 of his 20 attempts, his tenacity on the glass was pivotal, surpassing his previous best of 17 rebounds recorded against Pitt in December 2023.

This week is significant for Kentucky, which has seen a strong start under newly appointed coach Mark Pope. The Wildcats have excelled on offense but were challenged by Clemson’s stout defense.

Clemson, on the other hand, is hopeful that this victory can serve as a launching pad similar to last year’s win over ranked Alabama in the SEC/ACC Challenge, a triumph that propelled them to the Elite Eight.

A crucial moment in the game occurred during the first half when Kentucky struggled to find their rhythm, making only one out of their last nine shots amid a dominant 14-2 run from Clemson. This left the Wildcats trailing 37-30 at halftime, which represented the lowest scoring half for Kentucky this season.

In terms of statistics, Kentucky struggled significantly with their three-point shooting in the second half, converting only 3 out of 13 attempts.

Looking ahead, Kentucky will face a challenge as they travel to play No. 7 Gonzaga this coming Saturday, while Clemson gears up to begin ACC play at Miami.
