MILAN — On Tuesday, AC Milan and Bologna secured their places in the quarterfinals of the Italian Cup with impressive performances.
Milan dominated the match against Serie B leaders Sassuolo, winning 6-1, while Bologna had an equally convincing 4-0 victory over Monza, who have struggled in Serie A this season.
In the next round, AC Milan will meet either Roma or Sampdoria, while Bologna will take on the winners of the encounter between Atalanta and Cesena, scheduled for next week.
The game at San Siro was virtually decided within the first 23 minutes, as Sassuolo fell behind to a brace from Samuel Chukwueze, along with goals from Tijjani Reijnders and Rafael Leão.
Milan made several changes to their starting lineup ahead of a challenging Serie A match against Atalanta on Friday, and they opted for additional substitutions during halftime.
Despite the alterations, the Rossoneri continued to widen their lead with goals from Davide Calabria and Tammy Abraham, sandwiching a consolation score from Sassuolo’s Samuele Mulattieri.
Bologna displayed a balanced attack, with two goals scored in each half. Tommaso Pobega and Riccardo Orsolini were the first-half scorers, and they were followed by Benjamín Domínguez and Santiago Castro in the second half.
Notably, however, Orsolini had to leave the field shortly after his goal due to an injury, prompting concerns about the severity of the issue. As Bologna’s top scorer this season with six goals, his condition will be closely monitored.
