An investigation has been launched following an incident involving a Secret Service agent who discharged his weapon during a protective assignment outside the residence of Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen early Tuesday morning.
Around 1:30 a.m., the agent, who is part of Yellen’s security team, noticed a sedan with several individuals trying to open the car doors parked on the street, according to a spokesperson for the Secret Service, Anthony Guglielmi.
The situation escalated into a confrontation between the agent and the occupants of the vehicle, resulting in gunfire. It remains unclear how many rounds were fired by the agent. Fortunately, the Secret Service has indicated that there is no proof of any injuries occurring as a result of the gunfire.
The individuals in the sedan promptly fled the area, and local law enforcement was alerted to be on the lookout for the suspects. Guglielmi reported that the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department is overseeing the investigation into the shooting. Additionally, the case will be subject to review by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
