Manchester City and Real Madrid will be featured in the top-ranking pot for the upcoming Club World Cup draw, while Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami finds itself in the lowest-ranking group.
FIFA announced the details regarding the draw, scheduled to occur in Miami on Thursday. This newly revamped tournament is set to take place in the United States from June 15 to July 13 next year.
Joining Manchester City and Real Madrid in Pot 1 are prominent European clubs Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain, along with the four top-ranked teams from South America: Flamengo, Palmeiras, River Plate, and Fluminense.
On the other hand, Inter Miami managed to qualify for the tournament despite being removed from the MLS Cup playoffs in the first round. It is positioned in Pot 4, alongside the Seattle Sounders.
FIFA has arranged the 32 qualified teams into four pots for the draw to promote competitive balance and geographical diversity.
Pot 1 includes the elite teams from Europe and South America, whereas Pot 2 contains the other European qualifiers.
Pot 3 includes Al Hilal, the Saudi Arabian team featuring Neymar, as one of the two top-ranked teams from Asia. Additionally, this pot comprises the two highest-ranked teams from Africa, representatives from the North, Central America, and Caribbean confederation, along with two more South American teams.
A total of twelve European clubs will participate, highlighting teams such as Chelsea, Borussia Dortmund, Inter Milan, Porto, Atletico Madrid, Benfica, Juventus, and Salzburg.
The draw rules stipulate that each of the eight groups will include two European teams, while no other confederation is allowed more than one team per group.
Inter Miami and Seattle Sounders will automatically occupy the fourth position in groups A and B respectively, even before the draw is conducted.
Inter Miami is set to kick off the tournament with its opening match at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, while the Sounders will start at Lumen Field in Seattle.
