DENVER — In a thrilling matchup, Ja’Quan McMillian clinched the game for the Denver Broncos with a 44-yard interception return for a touchdown, just 1:48 left on the clock. The Broncos managed to overcome extraordinary performances from Cleveland’s quarterback Jameis Winston and wide receiver Jerry Jeudy, defeating the Browns 41-32 on Monday night.
Winston had an exceptional game, setting a franchise record by passing for 497 yards and four touchdowns. Jeudy, who recorded nine receptions for 235 yards—including the most ever by a player against his former team—also scored a touchdown. Having spent his initial four NFL seasons with the Broncos before being traded in the offseason, Jeudy was met with boos each time he made a catch during the game.
Despite his impressive yardage, Winston’s night was marred by three interceptions, two of which resulted in touchdowns for the opposing team. Nik Bonitto made a significant impact by returning one of the interceptions a remarkable 71 yards for a score just before halftime. With this performance, Winston made history as the first NFL quarterback to throw for over 400 yards, achieve four touchdown passes, and have two pick-sixes in a single game.
On the other side, Broncos quarterback Bo Nix accumulated 294 yards through the air, highlighted by a stunning pass deep from his own end zone that Marvin Mims Jr. caught for a 93-yard touchdown. However, Nix also struggled with two interceptions during the game.
With this victory, the Broncos improved to an 8-5 record as they approach their bye week, currently holding onto the seventh and final playoff spot. According to statistics from NFL.com, the team’s chances of making it to the postseason stand at 76%. Remarkably, the Broncos have not reached the playoffs since their Super Bowl victory following the 2015 season.
Winston’s performance exceeded the previous Browns record of 457 yards set by Josh McCown in 2015 against Baltimore. His contributions included a 70-yard touchdown pass to Jeudy and two touchdown passes to tight end David Njoku. Winston’s tenure as a starter for the Browns currently stands at 2-3 after stepping in for the injured Deshaun Watson.
Jeudy, who was the first-round draft pick in 2020, was traded to Cleveland earlier this year following a tumultuous four-year run with Denver.
