Justin Tucker’s inconsistent performance this season is worsening, impacting Baltimore’s prospects.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — A pressing dilemma is currently at the forefront for the Baltimore Ravens, reflecting a sense of urgency that extends beyond quarterback Lamar Jackson or the team’s stuttering defense. The issue at hand is one that has spiraled into a kicker crisis: Can Baltimore progress to the Super Bowl with Justin Tucker?

Tucker’s performance this season has raised eyebrows, transforming from one of the all-time greats to a weekly liability. The situation came to a head during the Ravens’ recent defeat against Philadelphia, where he notably missed two field goals and an extra point, contributing to a 24-19 loss. Coach John Harbaugh expressed concern, noting, “Points were at a premium in the game. They have been in a few of these games. Sometimes we haven’t made the most of our opportunity to score points,” and assured fans that he remains optimistic about rectifying the situation. “I believe it will. It has to. And he’s the guy to get it fixed.”

Harbaugh has shown unwavering support for Tucker, who is in his 13th year and has a contract extending through 2027. In his prime, Tucker was a distinct advantage for the Ravens in close matches; however, this season has seen him miss eight field goals, raising questions about his consistency. The latest loss has reinforced the notion that Baltimore cannot solely rely on an offense that is capable but has its limitations, especially against strong defensive units.

While the Ravens have demonstrated strength in limiting opposing run games—containing the Eagles to 140 rushing yards, with Saquon Barkley just eclipsing the century mark late in the match—other areas require urgent attention. Special teams faltered significantly, with Tylan Wallace struggling during punt returns and the offense starting critical drives deep in their territory.

Wallace commented on the team’s performance, saying, “They had great bounces, and they downed right down in there. I’m pretty sure we’ll come back and talk about those and see what we can do to avoid those.”

Amidst these challenges, the Ravens’ defense is showing steady improvement, having restricted Philadelphia to only 252 total yards. “I think we’ve just locked in on some things, and we’re playing our deep coverages better, bottom line,” Harbaugh pointed out, reflecting on their execution.

On a less positive note, Harbaugh offered little clarity on the status of receiver Diontae Johnson, who was active during the game but did not participate. Since being traded from Carolina, Johnson has managed just one catch across four games, leaving his role in limbo as the Ravens seek to evaluate their options.

Injuries also plague the squad, with standout pass-rusher Kyle Van Noy sidelined due to hamstring and neck issues, while wide receiver Rashod Bateman is dealing with knee soreness.

Statistically, Tucker’s efficiency has dwindled significantly; he maintained a 90% success rate over his first 12 seasons, which has plummeted to 70% this year. His accuracy from within 50 yards has also dropped—from 95% to 83%.

Looking ahead, the Ravens have a week off before facing the New York Giants on December 15. A pivotal home game against Pittsburgh follows, which could prove crucial in their quest for the AFC North crown.
