BOCA RATON, Fla. — Florida Atlantic University is in the process of hiring Zach Kittley, the offensive coordinator from Texas Tech, to be their new head coach, according to an insider associated with the situation. The two parties were ironing out the final terms of the agreement, as reported on Monday, with the individual speaking anonymously since an official announcement from the university has yet to be made.

This transition comes after the university decided to part ways with Tom Herman, who was let go two weeks ago, following a disappointing season with two games still remaining in his tenure.

Before returning to Texas Tech in 2022, Kittley held offensive coordinator roles at Houston Baptist and Western Kentucky. During his time at Texas Tech, his alma mater, the Red Raiders have produced impressive offensive statistics, averaging 435 yards per game over the past three seasons, ranking 22nd among all Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) teams.

In the current season, Texas Tech has distinguished itself as one of the most potent offenses in the country. The team ranked eighth in several categories, including yards per play and points per game, as well as yardage overall. Their offensive strategy was notable for its high pace, averaging 78.25 plays per game, closely trailing Syracuse, which led the nation with 78.33 plays per game.

Kittley has a history of coaching talent, having served in various capacities at Texas Tech, including as student assistant, graduate assistant, and assistant quarterbacks coach, where he contributed to the development of Patrick Mahomes, the celebrated quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs. Under Mahomes, the Chiefs secured the NFL MVP title and claimed a Super Bowl championship.

The Florida Atlantic Owls struggled this past season, finishing with a record of 3-9, marking their fourth consecutive season with a losing record. Coach Lane Kiffin previously led the program to a successful 27-13 record and two bowl victories during his three years. The team has diminished since Kiffin’s departure for Ole Miss in 2019, currently holding a 22-35 record over the past five seasons.
