NEW YORK — Harvey Weinstein was admitted to the hospital on Monday after his attorney reported concerns about a troubling blood test. This incident occurs shortly after Weinstein filed a lawsuit claiming inadequate medical care at a notorious New York jail facility.
Weinstein, aged 72, was moved to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan for urgent treatment prompted by a serious blood test result needing immediate care, according to a statement by his attorney, Imran Ansari.
“He is anticipated to stay there until his condition becomes stable,” the statement elaborated. “This denial of essential care not only constitutes medical malpractice but also infringes upon his constitutional rights.”
The New York City Department of Correction did not respond immediately to inquiries. However, the agency’s inmate records confirmed that Weinstein had been transferred from Rikers Island to the Bellevue Hospital Prison Ward.
Weinstein has been in the city’s custody since earlier this year, following the New York Court of Appeals’ decision to overturn his 2020 rape conviction. His case is scheduled for retrial in 2025, and he continues to assert his innocence.
In a legal submission last week, Weinstein’s legal team accused the city of failing to provide adequate medical attention for several health issues, including chronic myeloid leukemia and diabetes.
“When I visited him previously, I observed blood stains on his prison clothing, presumably from IVs, garments that had not been cleaned for weeks, and he lacked fresh underwear — conditions that are far from sanitary for someone facing serious health issues,” Ansari stated, comparing the conditions of Rikers Island to a “gulag.”
The Rikers Island jail complex, situated on an island in New York City’s East River, has been increasingly criticized for its treatment of detainees and hazardous living conditions. Just last week, a federal judge paved the way for a potential federal intervention in the jail system, citing that the city had placed its incarcerated individuals in “unconstitutional danger.”
Weinstein’s publicist, Juda Engelmayer, supported these claims in a statement on Monday.
“Mr. Weinstein, who is dealing with multiple health issues, including leukemia, has not received the medical care that someone in his condition rightfully deserves, regardless of his status as a prisoner,” Engelmayer remarked. “This neglect in many respects amounts to cruel and unusual punishment.”
