WEDDINGTON, N.C. — An elderly man from North Carolina has passed away 14 days following a significant explosion at his residence located in the Weddington area, as reported by local authorities.

The explosion occurred on November 17 at the home of 82-year-old Wesley Decker and was powerful enough to be felt throughout Union County, according to the sheriff’s department. The incident resulted in considerable damage to the property. Both Decker and his wife were quickly transported to area hospitals for treatment, from which they were later discharged.

Wesley Decker, who suffered severe burns during the explosion, was recovering in a long-term care facility at the time of his death on Friday. A statement about his passing was shared by Union County authorities on Sunday, and the local sheriff’s office is currently carrying out a death investigation related to the incident.

The Fire Marshal’s Office in Union County has concluded that the explosion was an accidental fuel-air explosion, a phenomenon that occurs when fuel combines with oxygen, leading to a destructive blast. Investigators have pinpointed three possible ignition sources within the garage, the area where the explosion began, but have not yet established the precise cause. Efforts to complete the investigation are ongoing.
