ATLANTA — A man who faced legal challenges alongside rapper Young Thug has been injured after an incident in jail but is projected to appear in court on Monday, according to his attorney.
Attorney Doug Weinstein has stated that Deamonte Kendrick, also known by his stage name Yak Gotti, suffered a stabbing incident on Sunday. The jury is set to reconvene on Monday to continue their deliberations regarding the charges against Kendrick and his co-defendant, Shannon Stillwell, who are both facing serious accusations related to gang activity, murder, drugs, and firearms.
Kendrick and Stillwell were included in a large indictment involving Young Thug, who, along with 28 others, was charged in May 2022 with conspiring to contravene Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. The jury selection phase for six of the defendants commenced nearly two years ago, with opening statements delivered a year prior.
In October, four defendants, including Young Thug, whose real name is Jeffery Williams, entered guilty pleas, resulting in Williams being placed on probation. Conversely, both Stillwell and Kendrick opted not to accept plea deals following extensive negotiations lasting over a week, and their legal representatives decided against presenting any evidence or calling witnesses in their defense.
The jury’s deliberations began last Tuesday afternoon, wrapping up at 5 p.m., and they resumed for approximately six hours on Wednesday before breaking for the Thanksgiving holiday. They are anticipated to pick up their discussions on Monday.
