LONDON — Sir Elton John has shared his challenges in watching his new musical due to a loss of vision caused by an infection.
The iconic singer-songwriter attended the premiere of “The Devil Wears Prada” in London on Sunday, where he revealed to the audience, “I haven’t been able to come to many of the previews because, as you know, I have lost my eyesight.”
He added, “So it’s hard for me to see it, but I love to hear it, and, boy, it sounded good tonight.”
At 77 years old, John revealed in September that an infection had resulted in “only limited vision in one eye.” He shared on social media that while he is in the healing process, it is progressing very slowly and may take some time for full vision to return to the affected eye.
John composed the musical score for “The Devil Wears Prada,” which is based on the 2006 film that follows the life of a young journalist caught in the extravagant yet cutthroat world of fashion journalism.
The performance at the Dominion Theatre showcased Vanessa Williams in the role of the formidable editor Miranda Priestly, a character originally portrayed by Meryl Streep in the film adaptation.
The gala event, which also served as a fundraiser for the Elton John AIDS Foundation, attracted numerous celebrities and notable figures from the fashion world, including designer Donatella Versace and former Vogue editor Anna Wintour, who has been rumored to have inspired the Priestly character.
Wintour expressed her enjoyment of the musical, calling it “entertaining.”
