CONAKRY, Guinea — Tragically, a large number of soccer supporters, including minors, lost their lives in a stampede that ensued following altercations during a soccer event in the largest city of southern Guinea. This news was highlighted by local sources and a coalition of political groups late on Sunday.

The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon in Nzerekore during a local tournament featuring teams from Labe and Nzerekore, organized to honor Guinea’s military leader, Mamadi Doumbouya. Guinea’s Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah noted this information on the social media platform X.

Bah confirmed that there were indeed victims stemming from the stampede, although specific details regarding the number of casualties were not disclosed. He mentioned that local authorities are actively working to ensure tranquility in the affected area.

According to the National Alliance for Alternation and Democracy, a coalition of political parties, the stampede resulted in numerous fatalities and numerous injuries, prompting a call for an official investigation into the events.

Reports from local media indicate that the chaotic scene erupted after fans became upset over a controversial penalty decision, which led to confrontations and a rush onto the crowded soccer field within the stadium.

Among those affected were children, as noted by Media Guinea and video footage that appeared to capture the aftermath of the incident. Media Guinea also reported that several individuals suffering from injuries are currently receiving critical care at a nearby hospital.
