HOUSTON — Fred VanVleet delivered an impressive performance, scoring a season-high 38 points, while Dillon Brooks contributed significantly with a clutch jump shot late in the game, leading the Houston Rockets to a narrow 119-116 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Sunday evening.

With the game tied at 113, Brooks executed a key jumper in the lane just before the shot clock ran out, giving the Rockets the lead with 33.1 seconds left on the clock. After Shai Gilgeous-Alexander missed his shot at the other end, Brooks secured the rebound and was subsequently fouled, allowing VanVleet to extend Houston’s lead by making both free throws to make the score 117-113 with just 4.6 seconds remaining.

Despite a late push from the Thunder, as Jalen Williams sank a 3-pointer to bring Oklahoma City within one point with only 2.4 seconds on the clock, VanVleet stepped up once more, sinking two additional free throws that ensured the win for the Rockets.

This victory marks the Rockets’ third consecutive win and their fifth triumph in the last six games, following a defeat to the Thunder in their previous encounter on November 8, where Oklahoma City had prevailed 126-107.

Gilgeous-Alexander once again showcased his scoring ability, netting 32 points, marking his fourth straight game with at least 30 points for the Thunder, who saw their four-game winning streak come to an end.

In terms of individual performances, Isaiah Hartenstein, returning after missing the first 15 games of the season due to a fractured hand, made a strong impact for the Thunder, finishing with 19 points and 13 rebounds. He has consistently recorded at least 10 points and 10 rebounds across all five games he has played this season.

The Rockets also displayed a balanced offensive effort, as four of their starting players reached double digits in scoring. Alperen Sengun led with 20 points, followed by Brooks with 16, and Jabari Smith Jr. added 15 points to the mix.

A pivotal moment in the game was Brooks’ jumper that shifted the score to 115-113, which followed a successful jump ball he won against Gilgeous-Alexander.

In terms of free throw efficiency, both teams combined attempted a hefty 64 free throws, with the Rockets converting 30 of their 39 attempts, while the Thunder made 19 of their 25.

Looking ahead, the Rockets are set to embark on a three-game road trip starting with a matchup against Sacramento on Tuesday night, while the Thunder will host the Jazz that same evening.
