NEW ORLEANS — In a thrilling matchup on Sunday, the Los Angeles Rams emerged victorious over the New Orleans Saints with a score of 21-14, marking the first loss for interim coach Darren Rizzi. Matthew Stafford was pivotal for the Rams, throwing two key touchdown passes during the fourth quarter. Kyren Williams shined on the ground, recording 104 rushing yards along with a touchdown.
As the game drew to a close, the Saints found themselves in a promising position, driving into the Rams’ territory and reaching the 10-yard line. However, a crucial fourth-and-3 play ended in disappointment for New Orleans as edge rusher Jared Verse managed to deflect Derek Carr’s pass, leaving it incomplete. This turned the tide in favor of the Rams (6-6) and allowed them to drain the clock, continuing the Saints’ struggles at 4-8.
Stafford completed 183 passing yards without committing any turnovers. His successful passes included a 3-yard touchdown to Demarcus Robinson and a decisive 7-yard throw to Puca Nacua, which put the Rams ahead for good with just over eight minutes remaining in the game.
On the injury front, New Orleans faced significant setbacks. Versatile tight end Taysom Hill, who had been performing well, suffered a left knee injury. He was carted off the field after a crucial fourth-and-short conversion, waving to the fans as they chanted his name in support.
Despite the defeat, the Saints managed to slightly outgain the Rams and hold onto the ball for a longer duration. However, they struggled to find the end zone. New Orleans settled for three field goals in the first half, with Blake Grupe successfully converting two kicks from 54 yards but missing one from 36. Their efforts resulted in a narrow 6-0 lead at halftime before the Rams took charge with Williams’ 4-yard touchdown run.
The Saints finally found the end zone in the fourth quarter when Carr connected with Marquez Valdes-Scantling for a 28-yard touchdown. This catch represented Valdes-Scantling’s fourth touchdown reception in as many games since joining the team midseason. Carr also added a 2-point conversion pass to Dante Pettis, knotting the score at 14.
In addition to Hill’s injury, the Saints dealt with various setbacks on their roster. Starting center Erik McCoy was sidelined again due to a re-aggravated groin injury, leading to Shane Lemieux taking over his position. As if that wasn’t enough, guard Nick Saldiveri was carted off with a left knee injury later in the game. Safety Tyrann Mathieu sustained a potential shoulder injury while tackling Williams in the second half and remained on the sideline for treatment afterward.
Looking ahead, the Rams will play at home against the Buffalo Bills next Sunday, while the Saints are set to face the New York Giants on the same day.
