COLLEGE PARK, Md. — In an impressive showcase of offensive prowess, Maryland triumphed over winless Alcorn State with a 96-58 victory in a nonconference basketball matchup on Sunday afternoon. Derik Queen led the charge for the Terrapins with 20 points, nine rebounds, and five assists.
The Maryland team exhibited exceptional shooting skills, achieving over 57% accuracy from the field by making 32 of 56 shots. They also excelled beyond the arc, connecting on 11 of 23 attempts while delivering an effective performance at the free-throw line, converting 21 out of 24. The Terrapins, now holding a record of 7-1, recorded an impressive 25 assists on their total made baskets and dominated the boards with a 44-31 rebounding advantage over their opponents.
Alcorn State managed to seize an early lead with a 12-1 run in the first half, putting them ahead 16-12 with 12 minutes remaining. Antonio Lisenbee’s layup tied the game at 20-20, but Queen’s quick response with a basket propelled Maryland into a 13-0 scoring streak. The Terrapins then outscored Alcorn State 28-11 for the remainder of the half, finishing with a 48-31 edge at halftime.
Queen hit six of his nine field goal attempts and achieved a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line, establishing himself as the top scorer for Maryland. Julian Reese followed closely, making 10 of 12 free throws and recording 11 rebounds, three assists, and two blocks. Selton Miguel also shone with his 4 of 7 three-point shooting, contributing 14 points along with Reese. Rodney Rice added 12 points and five assists, while DeShawn Harris-Smith came off the bench to score 10 points.
On the other side, Keionte Cornelius emerged as Alcorn State’s leading scorer with 12 points, shooting 3 of 6 from three-point range. Jalke Gaines-Wyatt and Omari Hamilton both contributed 10 points each to the Braves’ efforts. However, the team struggled with their shooting, managing only 21 of 67 from the field (31.3%), with a disappointing 5 of 20 from long range and finishing 11 of 17 at the charity stripe.
Maryland’s win marked their sixth victory in seven home games. They will kick off their Big Ten Conference campaign against Ohio State, who will visit this Wednesday. Meanwhile, Alcorn State, still seeking their first win of the season with an 0-9 record, is in the midst of an extensive 13-game road trip. They have already faced opponents on both coasts and across various mainland time zones, with their first home game in Alcorn, Mississippi, still a month away and listed as TBD on some schedules.
