Undefeated Fiji set to challenge France without Dupont in Dubai Sevens quarterfinals

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Fiji has set up a rematch against France from the Paris Olympics final after triumphing in all its pool matches during the Dubai Sevens rugby tournament on Saturday.

Fiji secured victories against New Zealand, the United States, and Spain, looking ahead to facing France, who denied Fiji a chance at their third consecutive gold medal in Paris this past July.

However, France will be competing without their star player Antoine Dupont, who was recently named the men’s world sevens player of the year. This tournament has seen significant changes, with a post-Olympic turnover and retirements across the 24 men’s and women’s teams, leading to 91 players making their debuts.

Argentina also went through the tournament unbeaten and is set to contend with Australia in the quarterfinals. Other upcoming matchups include five-time defending champions South Africa against New Zealand and Britain against Spain.

Notably, the men’s and women’s teams from Spain both reached the quarterfinals for the first time since 2019. The Spanish men achieved a remarkable win against New Zealand with a score of 26-14, marking only their third victory over them in the world series history.

On the women’s side, Spain overcame France 24-12 to advance. The only two unbeaten teams among the women were New Zealand, the current Olympic champions, and Australia, the reigning world series champions.

Maddison Levi from Australia, the women’s world sevens player of the year, showcased her prowess by scoring two hat tricks, accumulating a total of nine tries.

In a repeat of the Paris Olympic final, New Zealand demonstrated their strength with a decisive 38-5 victory over Canada.

Ireland’s Amee-Leigh Murphy Crowe had an impressive day, scoring seven tries, and becoming only the third woman in history to reach 200 tries in the world series, following in the footsteps of New Zealand legends Portia Woodman-Wickliffe and Michaela Blyde.

As the quarterfinals approach, Ireland will face New Zealand, Australia will play against Olympic silver medalist Canada, Olympic bronze medalist the U.S. takes on France, and Britain will compete against Japan.
